Offering Hygiene and Hope to the Homeless in Plano, Texas
In an effort to serve the homeless in our community, we decided to volunteer with Streetside Showers. This remarkable organization provides hot showers, hygiene, and clothing to the homeless and those in need.
Every day, they host free showers using their portable showers and bathrooms at a single location, while on Saturdays they serve two locations that they rotate daily. Additionally, they meet at the same locations on the same day of the week every week. We volunteered at their Plano location as shower valets on Saturday, May 6th.
Streetside Showers operates a system where those in need of a hot shower get on a list to receive a free shower from one of their portable showers. This is done since the portable showers and bathrooms can only hold a limited amount of water. When it is their turn to shower, individuals are provided with a bin containing a clean towel, a washcloth, and a hygiene kit containing soap, shampoo, q-tips, etc.
They also receive fresh underwear and socks if they need them. Shower valets assist in handing these items out, cleaning the bins after every use, and restocking them for the next person. Additionally, the shower valets clean the showers after each use to ensure maximum cleanliness and experience for every person.
We were incredibly inspired by the compassion we observed from the organization. We worked side by side with hardworking and dedicated individuals who were passionate about serving their community. This experience also opened our eyes to a need in our community we were not knowledgable of.
It also made us realize how much more we could do to support this community. Motivated to make a greater impact, we want to assist this organization further in their mission. Hearing of their shortage of clothing we are starting a clothing drive to help them meet the needs of the homeless in our community.
We are collecting men’s clothing of all sizes to give to the organization. We are also asking for monetary donations that will be used to buy underwear, socks, and hygiene products. We will be volunteering with them again on June 17th and we also plan on delivering the donations then. We are excited to further serve the homeless in our community by assisting this organization in meeting their needs.
We encourage everyone in our community to join us in supporting this worthy cause and making a difference in the lives of those who are experiencing homelessness.
Rotarians, Interactors, and Rotaractors are invited to bring their gently used clothes to the District Roundtable on June 10th. For those who are not members, please send us a message to arrange a drop-off or pick-up location. Additionally, we will be accepting funds through PayPal which will be used to purchase new underwear and hygiene items for those in need.
